On the evening of November 7th, 2009, Pragathi, on behalf of Drexel in association with Sruti, played host to one of the most distinguished saxophone artistes in the world, Dr. Kadri Gopalnath. Dr. Gopalnath revolutionized the Carnatic music scene by pioneering the use of the saxophone, a very Western musical instrument.
Dr. Gopalnath was accompanied by noted violinist Ms. A. Kanyakumari and Mr. B. Harikumar on the mrudangam. The audience was a varied mix of students, faculty and guests from all over Philadelphia. Tickets were priced at $22, with discounts for Drexel students and Sruti members.
The show began with introductions to the artistes, followed by their performance. The artistes took the audience on an unforgettable journey, with their spellbinding abilities on the instruments. Dr. Gopalnath proved yet again why he is considered one of the greatest musicians India has ever seen. Ms. Kanyakumari and Mr. Harikumar set the tone for what can only be described as mesmerizing experience.
It is not often that people with such great talent share a stage, and the three artistes together brought forth the magic that is Indian Carnatic Music, in all its glory. The evening was one that anyone in attendance would not forget in a very long time.
